This week, the Rotterdam-based storage and terminal operator Royal Vopak will be celebrating its 400th anniversary, under the motto ‘From tea to LNG’. The Port of Rotterdam Authority wishes to extend its warmest congratulations to the company!

400 jaar Vopak

The precursors of Royal Vopak, which was created in 1999 by the merger of the firms Van Ommeren and Pakhoed, came out of the estate of the bankrupt Dutch East India Company, explained historian Matthijs Dicke in the RTV Rijnmond television programme ‘7 Minuten’.

Four centuries ago, the company started storing crude oil in barrels and crates on quays along the Maas River in Rotterdam’s city centre. Gradually, it started moving these storage facilities to the outskirts of the town, and from there to the nearby Maasvlakte. Over the years, Royal Vopak has grown to become a leading international player in the storage of petroleum, chemicals, edible oils and gas.
