With the arrival of the 'E.R. Cape Town’ on April 22 in Mariel, Maersk Line offers a direct connection between Rotterdam and the Cuban port city, about 50 kilometres from Havana. According to Maersk, it is the fastest transit time on the route with a sailing time of eighteen days between the two cities.
The connection is part of Maersks’ weekly CRX service between Northwest Europe and Central America. Other cities that are visited are Bremerhaven, Tilbury, Cork, Port of Big Creek (Belize) and Manzanillo (Panama).
The market for containerised transport in Cuba has grown by approximately 10 to 15 percent per year in recent years. This is mainly driven by infrastructure projects and modernisation, such as the establishment of the 'Special Economic Zone' in Mariel and the makeover of Havana Port for cruise ships.
