Royal Couple visits Bayrolo project

During the Royal Couple’s working visit to the German federal state of Bavaria, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander took some time to be brought up to date on the Bayrolo project in Nuremburg. This project, an initiative of the Port of Rotterdam Authority and bayernhafen Gruppe, is intended to optimise transport connections between Bavaria and Rotterdam.

In late 2015, the results of a large-scale survey held among Bavarian shippers, freight forwarders and shipping companies were presented. The key conclusion of this survey was that the respondents would definitely consider adopting a transport route via Rotterdam as an alternative for the ports in Northern Germany.

After this presentation, two working committees set to work on proposals for optimising both the Bavaria-Rotterdam connection and the mutual provision of information. The developments within the Bayrolo project also align very well with other initiatives intended to intensify the connections between the port of Rotterdam and Southern Germany. For example, at the end of last year, EGS/TX stepped up the frequency of their rail shuttle connection (the ‘Rotterdam-Bayern Express’) from four to five transports per week.

Another impulse that will start to bear fruit in the period ahead is the realisation of the so-called ‘Third Track’, a 70-km stretch of extra rail tracks between Emmerich and Oberhausen that will significantly improve the German railway network’s connection to the Betuwe Route.
