Mv Wladyslaw Orkan hadn’t been spotted in the port of Rotterdam for some time. But this week, the ship called on Waalhaven. At the terminal, it loaded a cargo of four gas turbines and generators – the total weight of which was 1,400 megatonnes. A great order, according to Jos Masselink, General Manager at Broekman Project Services: “We are very pleased that the ship loaded here, since handling heavy cargo is one of our areas of expertise.”

Umm Al Houl
The final leg of the ship’s voyage ends at the project company Umm Al Houl, a consortium formed by Qatar Foundation, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Electricity and Water Company, Mitsubishi Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Company. The power station in the Arab emirate will have a total generating capacity of 2.5 gigawatts and can produce 618 million litres of drinking water per day. This amounts to nearly one-quarter of Qatar’s total energy capacity. The power station will output sufficient electricity and water to absorb seasonal fluctuations and major events. It will be taken into operation in phases. The first phase is scheduled for 2017, and the entire complex should be completed by the end of 2018.
